What is Media Buddhi?

Media Buddhi is the media and information literacy (MEL) wing of Boom, India’s first independent fact-checking organisation.

‘Buddhi’ is a word to be found in several Indian languages. It most commonly translates into ‘sense’, though it may also refer to ‘wisdom’ and ‘wit’. By ‘media’, we refer to all the information we receive daily whether it is through news, entertainment, social media and messaging services like WhatsApp; and via all platforms (digital, TV, print and offline).

Our mission is to ensure that everybody—school kids, college-aged adults, working adults and senior citizens—develops Media Buddhi.

Here's Why Everybody Needs An Information Strategy

We live in a world where our minds are constantly receiving new information at all times.

This could be in the form of news, whether in a newspaper or a website, on television or social media. It could be entertainment: movies and streaming television shows, or games on our mobile phones. Or communication, whether on WhatsApp or some other messaging service. And on social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Tim Tok, YouTube or Twitter.

This constant stream of information is overwhelming and we all adopt strategies to cope with it, whether we do so consciously or not. This last bit is key. Whether we have thought about it or not, we have all developed strategies to cope with this constant and furious stream of information: we keep some WhatsApp groups on mute, we try to limit our time on social media and grow furious with ourselves if we’re unable to do so, and so on.
